We promote a lot of 3 letter .com domains in our newsletter and they remain one of our most represented segment of domains at QEIP (we exclusively represented close to 120 of these domains currently). You may be curious why we would focus so hard on this niche? It is easy to see how they are valuable based on the scarcity factor of the fact that there is a limited quantity of them ... but their true value is more related to their potential end user demand.
In this, the internet industry has matured and most established companies have domains already and have no need to buy another one unless it is a MAJOR UPGRADE. I emphasize major upgrade because that is how company decision makers think about it. For example, if a company named 'Chest Consulting Group' has ChestConsulting.com & wants to upgrade, chances are they'd have limited interest in Chest.com (which we represent) as it is different than their brand & not worth the expected cost. On the other hand, CCG.com would probably make sense for them as a upgrade as they get to maintain their brand, benefit from a shorter domain, & have a objectively more valuable business asset. The end user demand for a domain like Chest.com would still be high but just that we wouldn’t expect it to sell to a established company - in our experience, a startup would be the most likely buyer as they would want to own the ‘Chest.com’ brand from day 1.
The moral of this story is that we represent 3 letter .com domains because they have the most end user demand out of any domain class we have seen - that is because 3 letter .com domains are some of the only domains that make sense for companies wanting to 'upgrade' their domain. This year alone, we have closed more 3 letter .com domain end user sales than any other domain class.
